wento to Sorrento
On our way down to Calabria, we decided to make a pit stop to the famous Amalfi coast. In order to visit the amalfi on a budget, we decided to stay in nearby Sorrento. Our stay in Sorrento was rather short there are a few highlights that made our time quite memorable.
1) Taking a bus ride to positano and Amalfi. Beware any who read this and are heading to Amalfi—this is not your average bus ride. This bus ride is along a narrow mountain road that seems like it should most definitely be a one way road (it’s not). The route takes you along the cliffs and gives you some of the most beautiful views of the towns below but will also leave you slightly terrified for your life.
2) Visiting a Raffael Celentano photo exhibition. This photo gallery was one of my favorite things about Sorrento. We were able to meet the photographer behind the exhibit and his photos were just amazing. I was actually moved to tears by his photographs!
3) Having fresh Squeezed lemonade. Sorrento is surrounded by so many lemon trees everywhere so of course it makes sense that this lemonade would be amazing. We encountered a little stand that made lemonade right in front of your eyes and it was quite a treat! Also at this time I would like to mention that while we were on our way home back from Amalfi to Sorrento, my sister thought she saw a lemonade stand at one of the stops. Naturally, she got super excited and made us get off the stop to get lemonade. This led to one wild adventure. It turned out the stand was not a lemonade stand but rather a meat stand that uses lemon to soak their meat (or something like that). We ended up slightly stranded in the middle of nowhere until the next bus came. Unfortunately the bus was entirely full so we had to sit in the very front of the bus right next to the driver. This turned out to be quite an entertaining and terrifying experience because the bus driver was really whipping it around the mountain and had a little road rage when he got stuck behind a slower van. I couldn’t decide if I was glad the van was there so that the driver couldn’t speed up any faster, or if it was just worse because he was riding the van’s tail SO CLOSELY the ENTIRE ride home.
4) Seeing the pretty hydrangeas everywhere. The hydrangeas in Sorrento and the surrounding area are ridiculous because they are deep shades of purples, blues, pinks and variations of the three. Never have I seen more beautiful hydrangeas. I love the flower so much because it reminds me of my wonderful mother!
